SAT vs ACT: Which Test Should You Take?

Choosing between the SAT and ACT is one of the first big decisions in your college admissions journey. Both tests are accepted by virtually all U.S. colleges, so the best choice depends on your strengths and preferences.

Test Structure Comparison

The SAT has two main sections: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, and Math. The ACT has four sections: English, Math, Reading, and Science. The ACT also offers an optional Writing section.

Time Pressure

The ACT gives you less time per question, which means pacing is more critical. If you tend to work quickly and efficiently, the ACT might suit you well. If you prefer to take your time analyzing questions, the SAT’s more generous timing might be better.

Math Differences

The SAT has a no-calculator section, which tests your mental math and algebraic reasoning. The ACT allows calculator use throughout. The ACT covers slightly more advanced math (including trigonometry), while the SAT focuses more deeply on algebra and data analysis.

Science Section

The ACT’s Science section is unique — it tests your ability to interpret data, evaluate experiments, and analyze scientific arguments. It does not require memorized science facts. If you are strong at reading graphs and tables, this could be an advantage.

Scoring

The SAT is scored on a 400-1600 scale. The ACT is scored on a 1-36 scale (composite average of four section scores). Both have no penalty for wrong answers, so always guess if you are unsure.
